Exclamation Study shows Zinc megadosing definitely boosts testerone AND thyroid hormones!!!
by Narkissos 11-17-2009, 10:37 AM

The effect of exhaustion exercise on thyroid hormones and testosterone levels of elite athletes receiving oral zinc.

School of Physical Education and Sports, Selçuk University, Konya, Turkey. kmkilic@yahoo.com.tr

OBJECTIVES: The present study aims to investigate how exhaustion exercise affects thyroid hormones and testosterone levels in elite athletes who are supplemented with oral zinc sulfate for 4 weeks.

METHODS: The study included 10 male wrestlers, who had been licensed wrestlers for at least 6 years. Mean age of the wrestlers who volunteered in the study was 18.70 +/- 2.4 years. All subjects were supplemented with oral zinc sulfate (3 mg/kg/day) for 4 weeks in addition to their normal diet. Thyroid hormone and testosterone levels of all subjects were determined as resting and exhaustion before and after zinc supplementation.

RESULTS: Resting TT3, TT4, FT3, FT4 and TSH levels of subjects were higher than the parameters measured after exhaustion exercise before zinc supplementation (p<0.05). Both resting and exhaustion TT3, TT4 and FT3 values after 4-week zinc supplementation were found significantly higher than both of the parameters (resting and exhaustion) measured before zinc supplementation (p<0.05). Resting total testosterone and free testosterone levels before zinc supplementation were significantly higher than exhaustion levels before zinc supplementation (p<0.05). Both resting and exhaustion total and free testosterone levels following 4-week zinc supplementation were found significantly higher than the levels (both resting and exhaustion) measured before zinc supplementation (p<0.05).

CONCLUSION: Findings of our study demonstrate that exhaustion exercise led to a significant inhibition of both thyroid hormones and testosterone concentrations, but that 4-week zinc supplementation prevented this inhibition in wrestlers. In conclusion, physiological doses of zinc administration may benefit performance.

Footnotes: During very hard training cycles of short duration, mega-dosing zinc will boost recovery.

Keep your megadosing protocols to no longer than 4 weeks, after which you should cycle down to a maintenance dose.

One has to be careful with megadosing zinc. It can cause many physiological problems in excess. One being its effects on copper and iron absorption. Second is that zinc is a strong Lewis acid, in the presence of HCL in the stomach zinc sulfate disassociates into zinc ions and makes a compound called zinc chloride which is a corrosive compound. Not that zinc cant be supplemented safely and effectively. But with zinc, more is not better at some points.

Agreed.

I haven't seen any studies to suggest that problems of excess are a concern on the short-term... However, C_Bino (on AR) did suggest that complications (such as reduced immunity) can occur at dosages over 50mg/day.

Some of my athletes average 120-180 mg per day... and have for months. None have reported any negative effects.

i've noticed increased aggression and I was more easily irritated while supplementing with 50mg of Zinc in a ZMA stack....Initially I couldn't figure out what my problem was then I recognized the addition of zinc as the only difference. Typically when I supplement with Zinc alone, I keep it at 25mg or less.

Although, within a few weeks the aggression/irritability returns, so in general I only supplement with zinc for 1 or 2 weeks at a time in regards to a 'pre-bed' ZMA stack. (none of those totals include any multi-vit related zinc)

They say one of the biggest risks in megadosing zinc is the fact it has psychological effects. High levels of zinc have been shown to cause mental illness. Maybe thats why Johan finds Prada so attractive.

Oh come on, Prada is cute in his own way.

So does that mean that we should go back to our ZMA stack again. Or is zinc sulfate the only option as far as bioavailability???
