The History of "The Narkside"

Narkissos: An Introduction

Many people have asked what my screen name meant.

Many people have also asked what 'Narked' mean... as so many negative connotations are attached to the term 'Nark'.

So... the story:

'Narkissos' is my alter-ego.

I joined a discussion board 5 or so years ago.

I joined using my real name.

I joined this forum, my first forum, because the members had been using my pictures without my permission.

They were saying all sorts of shit about me, based on the pics: How much of a loser I was; How vain i was etc.

(The pics were taken from some photo shoots i did when i modeled for a local group back in 1999/2000).

So i joined to request the removal of said pics.

Anyway...when i posted, a boatload of people who supposedly 'knew me', popped out of the wood work to flame the hell out of me.

Kept saying how self-centred i was... How vain.

Simply because i competed in bodybuilding... and was in shape.

I spent a lot of time alone in real life, because i never really fit in social groups.

Said social groups took this as me "acting as if i was 'better' than they".

And... none of them ever spoke to me, or invited me into their circles.

Thus, in being a wall-flower... I automatically got mislabeled as well.

Anyway... fast-forward:

These people flamed me at every turn.

The pics were eventually removed...but the damage was done.

Anything i posted got torn up by a detractor who didn't care for the advice (I generally posted fitness advice solely).

The members' primary focus was to rip up the vain guy.

Anyway... met with the opposition, i figured that there was no sense in trying to change anyone's opinion... Such would be too taxing anyway.

So... I adopted the screen name: "Narkissos"

He was the mythological youth who died looking at his own reflection...

From his name, 'Narcissism/Narcissistic' is derived.

It was a personal joke...The only amusement i could derive from my time there.

...Time, and an ever-present struggle to fit in.

Finally, I decided to be true to myself...

My lifestyle was offensive to them... Me being in shape made them feel self-conscious.

There was no way in hell that i was giving up my lifestyle and passion to soothe others' inadequacies:

Square pegs can't fit in round holes...

So i left:

I left that forum to seek out like-minded individuals, and I took the screen name with me.

I joined a couple fitness forums and started posting.

The information was well-received, and i moved up in the hierarchy.

I became a respected member, Vet, VIP, and Moderator on a number of forums... as well as Admin on another.

After 4 or so years of assisting people on numerous health and fitness forums, I had a following... as well as a number of clients.

I realized the trend on fitness boards was to discuss drug-use primarily.

I wasn't comfortable with this...

So... I moved to my own board...so as to focus on specific areas of the lifestyle i subscribed to.

This isn't to say that i ceased to help on the other boards... Because i continued with the same fervor.

However, I'd officially registered my contest-prep (and fitness consulting) business (which had been running for 2 years to date)... and i needed a home for it.

Said home had to be drug-free, and comfortable... So my clients and friends could learn and interact without the usual bullshit.

For the above reason, I didn't advertise this new board.

I didn't want to bring the drama over honestly.

My rationale was, that my business would grow by word-of-mouth... as the quality of my service (and the content, and environment of my forum) spread.

Story of "GetNarked.net":

My first URL here was: corey-narkissos-springer.com

This served well for those who knew me.. as some knew me as Corey Springer... while some knew me as Narkissos.

It was far too long too remember for newer people though... so I needed something short and catchy.

It was a member here: Ray, who told me to go with 'GetNarked.net'

People online usually abbreviated my screen-name to 'Nark'

Ray, one of my best friends, however... was one of the few local members who called me Nark in person.

Heck...she even sent my mail as: "Nark Springer".. or "Narkissos Springer".

Lol... she's the greatest!

Anyway, she said: "Run with it Nark"

So I went with it.

The rationale was: We need something short, catchy, and easy to remember.

Drawing on the 'Got Milk?' craze, 'Got Nark?' made sense...

Anyway... I use 'Narked' to describe all things fitness (as well as all fitness-related services offered by myself).

Basically: "Got Nark? Get Nark" was the core.

Ergo our slogan:

"Get ripped.. Get Shredded... Get Narked.
Getnarked.net"

Story of "The NarkSide":

Ok.. catchy URL: Check.

We still needed a name for the board.

Like many other fitness forums, the URL couldn't fly.

It was catchy.. but not catchy enough to serve as the title.

Besides, the abbreviation (GNN) was pretty boring lol.

Some members (i believe it was Night-train and Upstate tank) used to welcome new members to Getnarked.net by saying: "Welcome to the NarkSide"

This was a spin-off of the 'DarkSide'. I'm not sure if this was a pun based on my dark humour... but it rocked!

Thus, "The Narkside" was born.

'TNS', owned by 'CNS'

We're a couple days short of being a year old: 21378 Posts and 333 Reg. Members strong.

I'm loving it. :)

So... that's the history.

Almost 1 year strong. Truly a milestone. 5 years from now we'll look back and admire the way things slowly grew and got better. The Narkside is a place where people of all shapes,sizes, sexes and colors can kick back and relax.....no prob!!
