They say it's functional and essential.

I do my pullups kind of like a kipping but not quite that explosive. I think they are beneficial for increasing upper body explosiveness, but probably not as good for building muscle.

I am interested in crossfit, but I have to say that the overall preaching mentality and superiority attitude of their writings is kind of putting me of.

i think they're completely retarded.....looks dangerous for a whole lotta joints...not to mention are you really activating as many muscle fibers? no....well maybe you'll activate as many as my 10 real pullups when you do 30-40 of these....

^^ well they activate more muscle fibers, that is why they are easier. The thing is the effect cross fitters want from kippings is not the same as bodybuilders want from pullups. One cant say one is better than the other since they serve different purpose.
