ok guys lets have a discussion
body weight training vs gym for a fitness model look. lets look at those guys in the mens fitness mags, fitness magazines looks the part. well prob 99% of them that are in the mag use the gym for most of there training... agree? lets say both guys diet the same and same cardio level so pretty even 1. does body weight push up,chins, dips, lounges, etc. 2. does weights ( gym) do you think they can achieve the same or very similar look? ![]() ![]()

I think you can achieve the fitness model look with bodyweight exercises, however I think it will take a lot longer to achieve.

Gymnasts manage it pretty well. Hard with the legs I guess, but maybe pistols can do the trick?

id venture anything is possible provided diet is in check. Although I would venture and say its gonna be a LOT more efficient done in the gym.

Gymnasts train 3+ hours per day. I think that should be noted in the discussion.

but I think most traditional exercise can be swapped with a bodyweight exercise. Shoulder press can be substituted with hand stand push ups, rows with bodyweight rows, flies with trx flies, lat pulldowns with chins, weighted triceps extensions with a bodyweight triceps extension of appropriate angle. The three exercises I have most problem thinking of a substitute for is bench, squat and deadlift. Pistols maybe instead of squats but pistols are not all that heavy, deadlift is impossible to substitute and perhaps bench can be replaced with various dip and push up variations. Maybe one arm pushups? Anyone that can crank out rep after rep of controlled muscle ups is bound to have a pretty impressive upper body. Someone like Hannibal has very good upper body, but he doesn't seem to have have any calf development at all and I bet its the same for his upper legs. I wonder if high jumps, pistol jumps, other different kind of jumps and sprints could develop the leg strength and size efficiently? Probably not because if it did high jumpers probably wouldn't spend so much time in the gym? |
