WILKINSBURG, Pa. -- Amy Kucsmas knew she would soon be a murder victim, and the 36-year-old Mt. Oliver woman made a final phone call to her daughter while her apparent killer stood nearby.
Two weeks later, on Friday morning, Kucsmas' body was found bound with electrical tape and wrapped in a carpet in a wooded area of Hunter Park in Wilkinsburg. "Kayla got a call the night that it happened. She said that she's going to die tonight," Kucsmas' sister, Jayme, told WTAE Channel 4's Marcie Cipriani on Wednesday. "She told Kayla not to cry and that everything will be OK, and then Kayla heard some man in the background screaming. Then, she said her mom was hysterically crying. She couldn't understand what she was saying, and then the phone hung up." Allegheny County homicide detectives used a tattoo and dental records to help identify the body. They have no suspects, but hope DNA from the tape on the carpet will lead them in the right direction. Family members acknowledged that Amy Kucsmas was struggling with a drug addiction, but they said she was also a wonderful mother who was trying to get her life together. "Apparently, she was begging to talk to her kids before she died," said Kucsmas' sister-in-law, Gina. That final phone call was made on July 11, and the family said Amy Kucsmas left them with one clue when she told her daughter that she was on Pittsburgh's North Side. How the woman died -- and how the body ended up in Wilkinsburg, far away from the North Side -- is still under investigation by county police and the medical examiner's office. "She was my sister. She had two brothers who loved her, three kids. She had lots of nieces and nephews. She had family that loves her and that she loved," Jayme Kucsmas said. Wilkinsburg public works employees were called to remove the carpet from the park on Friday morning. "We thought it was a dead dog or something," said David Trent, a public works employee. "We had a call that there was something up there smelling." When Trent cut the tape on the carpet, he saw the woman's body. She appeared to have been dead for some time. "We didn't really see any clothing. It looked like it had a shirt on, but nothing on the bottom," Trent said. Erik Moon lives above the spot where the body was found. He said that he often walks on a path toward the ballfield at the park and had smelled a bad odor lately. "I did notice the carpet there, but I figured it was just some illegal dumping," said Moon. http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/cnn-ne...920/detail.html
