Hey guys
when doing military press with barbell do you 1. go down to chin level. 2. go to chest. reason i want to know is it bad to go to chest? cause when i do this i feel a greater stretch and i believe it helps round the delts more. i have no pain from it. just want to know what is safer in the long run.

chest, i go to the chin on smith press though cause the set path doesn't feel right if i go any deeper.

I always go down to chest if I press to the front, or down to the traps if I press behind the neck.
If I ever did presses in the smith machine I wouldn't go below chin though for the same reason Rhino states, the angles gets all weird when the motion is that locked. One more reason why I avoid smith machines like the plague ![]() |

I feel when I go heavy,I can only go as low as shoulder level and any lower puts to much strain on my front delts. I do have a very long reach and this maybe my problem.

i use to bring it all the way down to chest, but now just to chin. i feel like i lose the tension in my delts when i bring it all the way down to chest (and strain my muscles a little more). i get a bigger pump bringing it to below chin.

Yeah, I would agree with Paddy. I would go down to chest but if I feel too much stress on the shoulders I would shorten the ROM.
