Default What would you do different?

Lets say you could go back to when you where 14 years old and primed for starting to hit weights. Kind of in line with Booz thread about training with his son
http://www.getnarked.net/forum/showthread.php?t=13535

How would you coach yourself? What would you do differently from what you have done?

I would:

1. Ban me from reading all bodybuilding magazines, nothing against bodybuilding but the training advice in the mags are such garbage and the focus on supplements are way to radical.

2. Convince myself to stick with wrestling for a few more years.

3. Give myself a copy of Rippetoe's Starting Strength and Practical programing. Those two books contain 99% of what one needs to know to become strong.

4. Teach myself olympic weightlifting and make myself appriciate the beauty of the two lifts.

5. Make myself squat ass to grass 3 times a week.

6. Explain to myself why the routines in Arnolds encyclopaedia are actually quite good.

7. Teach myself the importance of progressively increase weight, even by just tiny steps.

8. Explain to myself while bulking is a bad idea for someone with a natural tendency towards being a chubster.

Would the politically corect answr be hire Nark?

In hindsight, mind you I didn't start training till maybe 21 and at 14 I was figuring out what to do with my new found glory (i.e my penis randomly becoming rock hard), I probably would have liked a good mentor or trainer. There are these gym rats that would come up to you and tell you what is the best thing to do but I think as a beginner its difficult to conceptualize the mechanics of movements. So yes read a good book to understand the theory but also have someone competent to show you the practical aspect of it.

definitely focus more on mind muscle connection rather than just moving the weight. contracting and lengthening the muscle throughout the whole range of the movement.

Well two years ago I would have said Arnolds routines where absolute madness because I had been brainwashed by the whole overtraining myth.

Today I think the volume and rep ranges looks spot on for gaining muscle, as long as one is careful about not going to failure to often, the routines has a very good balance between pushing and pulling, its focused on compound movements, the training frequency is high and there is not the slightest hint of any HIT bullshit lol

I would have prioritized the diet...more steak, eggs, tuna.... That's the ultimate question. How much further along would I be with those additional years of high quality consumption
